Phonos 2.0 Connection Help

Phonos Error Message: Wi-Fi SSID not found

Make sure the phone is on your Wi-Fi network. The phone will search for a Wi-Fi network for ten seconds, which should be sufficient in most circumstances. If not, start the app again.

Phonos Error Message: Failed to find any ZonePlayers

Make sure the phone is on your Wi-Fi network. If you have a complex network you may need to enter the IP address of one of the ZonePlayers so the app can find the rest, see here for details.

Phonos 1.0 Connection Help

Phonos Error Message: Failed to connect to PC, check Wi-Fi connection and PC configuration

Check the following:

  • Make sure the phone is on your Wi-Fi network
  • Make sure the PC running the Phonos Server is awake and connected to the network
  • Make sure the name you entered is the same as the name of the PC running the Phonos Server
  • Try connecting the phone to the PC that has Zune software installed via USB cable. Once Zune recognizes your phone, run Phonos and see if it can find the server. If it can then it means the PC is configured correctly, and the problem is name lookup (see below) or mis-configured wi-fi.

Some phones have trouble finding PCs by their name, if this affects you then instead enter the IP address of the PC instead (an IP address is four numbers separated by periods). To find a PC's IP address go here. Note that if you configure Phonos to use an IP address and your PC's IP address changes you will have to re-enter the address again: you will know if this happens because the Phonos app will fail to connect to the server and again prompt you for the server name. We apologize for this inconvenience, Windows Phones do not support NetBIOS name lookup which is how your PCs find each other by name on many home networks. Name lookup will work if you have a DNS Server on your network (e.g. in your router, such as the ActionTec MI424-WR).

If connection problems persist, the next thing is to verify the Phonos Server itself is working. To do this open your web browser on a PC and enter this as an Address: http://server:7008/phonos (replace server with the name of your PC).

If the Server is working you will see a page titled "PnPProxy Service" and some technical stuff you can happily ignore, if it is not working correctly you will get an error.

If that works then go to your phone, open up Internet Explorer and enter the same Address and see what that shows. If that works then your PC is working, its firewall is not in the way and the Wi-Fi on your phone is working. If that doesn't work then try with the IP address instead of the server name (as described above). If it still fails then you will need to recheck the PC installation, the firewall on the PC and your Wi-Fi configuration on your phone. Also check the Event Log to see if any warnings or errors were listed when Phonos was installed on the PC.
